Style: Rhyhm & Blues, Jump Blues, Jazz
Available
Beginning his promising rise to national fame in the late 1930s as a rival to that other trumpet-playing, gravel-voiced entertainer, Louis Armstrong, Hot Lips Page changed tack, jumping with both feet in the direction of the burgeoning R&B sound in the mid 1940s. It was a move that was sure to offend all the serious jazz music fans, but it would endear him to all the low-brow jump-blues lovers – both then and now! This CD celebrates those R&B years of the man who could have been King… >
Customer reviews:
PHEWWW- what a top album. Hot "Lips" Page was one of THEE trumpet players in the 30's, 40's and 50's alongside with Louis Armstrong. Like Mr. Armstrong, Hot"Lips"Page owned a strong voice with "character" and a unique stile of blowing his horn. In the 30"s his star was rising and became popular all over the states, ending up signing a contract with Bluebird ( RCA), performed with other big names like Count Basie, Big Je Turner etc.. With feet in both scenes, Jazz and R&B, he recorded through the years a big bunch of great R&B classics, like "There Ain't No Flies On Me", "Let Me In!", "Main Street" etc. for labels like Columbia, King, Apollo, RCA Victor etc., along with some great Jazz tunes, which he recorded with Jazz greats likeKenny Clarke or the big Thelonius Monk. Here we get a good overview of his R&B recordings and with 27 tracks it is a real schnide. Includes, as usual, a good booklet by Dave Penny. Finest R&B by one of the greats!!!!
