Every once in a while a new songwriter comes along who makes you sit up and take note. The brand new EP from Rossella Scarlet & the Cold Cold Hearts on El Toro is a debut recording with exquisite original songs in the best tradition of old school Country music. Honouring the themes and standards of Hank Williams, these musical jewels amply demonstrate Ms Scarlet’s ability to craft new classics in a timeless way.
Rossella Scarlet, that petite flame haired songbird, incongruously came to Americana via Italy and London. And yet here are those universal themes we all recognise, love, loss, longing and hope. Rossella’s fragile, sweet vocals and lovely harmonies take us on a familiar journey though the Country canon.
Accompanied on her Western road trip by legendary steel player Phil Morgan (Lynette Morgan & the Blackwater Valley Boys, Doel Brothers and Boot Heel Playboys), Emma Goss on bass (Sarah Vista, Hiway 51 and the Chord Royales) and Graham Murphy (Jump Cat Jump) on lead guitar (with Rossella herself on additional guitar, the music forms the perfect backdrop to these wistful, yearning tunes.
Title track The Day Will Come is a mid tempo number, amply communicating the hope still to be found through tears, whilst a duet with Phil Morgan, Wondering, is a stellar arrangement of a song written by the great Frankie Riedel communicating that breathless pause on the brink of a new relationship. Painting on the Wall is a bittersweet ballad like a little stab to the heart and You Were so Blind is an almost defiant lament to a careless, selfish lover.
This first mini collection of Rossella’s work promises great things from this original and talented artist but for now, we can all be glad that ‘The day has Come’!
